EMPA  is a public, interdisciplinary research institution for material sciences and technology within the ETH Domain.

The aim of Empa's activities is to transform research results and scientific knowledge into marketable innovations. In taking on this bridging function between applications oriented research and the practical implementation of novel ideas, Empa holds an essential position in the Swiss educational, research and innovation scene. The broad palette of competences ranging from nanotechnology to structural engineering allows Empa to provide in-house interdisciplinary solutions. Empa has more than 900 employees among them 520 scientists and engineers, and 110 PhD students.

Empa brings its experience in fibre reinforced composite, modelling with Finite Elements, system identification, structural monitoring and metrology.

Empa is active in the field of fiber reinforced composite since the early 70s and did pioneering work in introducing fibre reinforced composite in civil engineering.

Empa has a well equipped testing facility for large scale tests with modern measurement instrumentation as well as skilled engineers and technical personnel with plenty of experience in setting-up test rigs and performing static and dynamic tests. Complex component tests for research and industrial customers that include strain measurements are performed regularly.

Empa has also long-standing competence in structural monitoring, system identification using experimental modal analysis and model correlation of civil structures.

Empa has experience in participating in European projects as a contractor and work package leader.

Empa led the structural health monitoring work package of the project SUSTAINABLE BRIDGES and is currently leading the component testing work package of the project I-SSB.
